someone-getting-a-flu-shot With September on the horizon, the time has come to say goodbye to summer and start transitioning into the fall season. With the autumn months comes some great things (changing leaves, cooler temperatures, football!), but there are also certain health concerns related to the fall season that everyone should be aware of. With this in mind, the family healthcare providers here at Family Practice Center wanted to take some time to answer a few questions about common autumn health concerns and how they can be avoided:

Question #1: Will Getting a Flu Shot Fully Prevent Me From Getting The Flu?

Not necessarily, but getting a flu shot this fall is still very highly recommended. The flu is a very adaptive virus that changes subtly every year. So while flu shots can help protect against the most common flu strains going around this fall, it’s not a guarantee that you won’t catch it. Still, being inoculated against the flu will likely make your illness considerably less severe in the case that you do catch it this fall or winter.

Question #2: Should I Be Active & Outdoors?

Now that the summer heat has finally broken, it is quite enjoyable to spend more time outside exercising. The CDC (Centers for Disease Control) recommends getting at least 150 minutes of moderate-intensity aerobic activity each week. This can take many forms, from going to the gym, playing outdoor sports like tennis or pickleball, or riding your bike, to less intense things like making a habit of taking an evening walk or taking a yoga class. Doing so can help keep you healthy and even reduce stress and improve your mood.

Question #3: Should I Consider Using a Humidifier?

As temperatures drop, the air can also become less humid (meaning more dry). This dry air can potentially lead to respiratory issues like asthma, bronchitis, sinus infections, and nosebleeds. This is true for everyone, not just those with existing respiratory issues. Using a humidifier in your home (especially at night) can help improve your breathing, reduce the risk of lung problems, and just generally improve your overall comfort level.

The fall is a wonderful season that offers so much to enjoy. Our hope is that following these steps will help our readers have the healthiest and happiest fall season possible this year.
