We want to welcome everyone to our introductory health and wellness spotlight feature of the month blog. We will be using these posts to go in-depth on a specific area of health and wellness in the hopes of emphasizing its importance to our patient’s physical and mental wellbeing. To get things started, we wanted to discuss weight management this month and the many benefits that maintaining a healthy body weight can have for people of all ages. Help Prevent Heart Disease Weight management is a critical tool in the fight against heart disease. Each year, cardiovascular related health conditions including heart attacks and coronary artery disease are the leading cause of death for adults in the US. Achieving and maintaining a healthy body weight can help keep additional stress of the heart and promote long-term heart health. We recommend eating a heart healthy diet rich in leafy green vegetables, whole grains, and lean proteins. Lower Risk of Other Major Health Concerns A person’s weight can also impact their risk of developing other serious health concerns over time. For example, being overweight can significantly increase a person’s chances of developing high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and diabetes as they age. Additionally, carrying extra weight for an extended period of time can also lead to arthritis and potentially debilitating joint pain. It’s important to exercise regularly and stay physically active, especially as you age. Improve Confidence & Self-Esteem The effects of weight management are more than just physical. There is a significant correlation between a person’s weight and the way they feel about themselves. Losing weight can have a very positive impact on a person’s self-confidence and emotional wellbeing. Even a modest positive change in a person’s weight can provide a considerable feeling of personal satisfaction and achievement. Here at Family Practice Center, our primary care providers perform a variety of nutrition and weight management services for our patients. This includes our new weight management clinic at our Cumming location, led by our newest provider Dr. Leah Macklin, beginning in March. If you feel like you need some assistance in this area and would like to consult with our experts or sign up for our clinic, contact Family Practice Center at one of our four Atlanta area locations (Sandy Springs, Alpharetta, Canton, Cumming). You can also follow us on Facebook for additional practice updates, health tips, news, and much more.
