people-lined-up-for-a-vaccination The fall season is an important time to catch up on vaccinations, including COVID-19 booster shots, to stay healthy through the winter months and holiday gatherings.

However, recent federal changes have made vaccine access a little different than in past years. Below, we explain what’s changed, who is eligible, and discuss how they can still get vaccinated against COVID-19 this fall.

What Are The New Restrictions On COVID-19 Vaccines?

In years past, anyone who wanted a COVID-19 vaccination or booster shot could walk into a local drug store and get one free of charge and with no prescription needed or no questions asked. Recent changes instituted by the FDA have made it so retail pharmacy locations in Georgia will now only allow its pharmacists to give the shot to people who have a prescription for it until the CDC approves the updated version of the vaccine.

That doesn’t mean the vaccination is unavailable in Georgia, it just means that you may now need a prescription in order to get one – at least as things currently stand. Let us explain.

Who Is Eligible for a COVID-19 Vaccine Prescription?

According to new FDA guidelines, people older than 65 in Georgia can still receive the vaccine as they have in years past. People under 65 with certain underlying conditions that affect the body’s ability to fight off COVID-19 infection will be eligible as well. These conditions include (but are not limited to):

  • Asthma
  • Blood cancers
  • Chronic kidney disease
  • Cystic fibrosis
  • Dementia
  • Diabetes
  • Heart conditions
  • HIV
  • Parkinson’s disease
  • Obesity
  • Current or recent pregnancy
  • Primary immunodeficiencies
  • Use of immunosuppressive drugs
