hands-hold-plastic-heart Circulation is a very important process where our hearts pump blood that is full of essential nutrients and oxygen throughout the body. Healthy circulation is an absolutely critical component of long-term health and wellness. However, there are many underlying health concerns and conditions that can cause the circulation process to not run as smoothly or efficiently as it should. Poor circulation over time can be very dangerous, which is why our health care providers here at Family Practice Center wanted to discuss some common causes of circulation issues (as well as potential solutions).

We wanted to begin by reinforcing that poor circulation is not a condition on its own, but a symptom of other health problems. One thing that makes poor circulation dangerous is that it can often occur for years before any noticeable symptoms occur. However, there are some warning signs to be aware of.

Common symptoms of circulation issues include:

  • Numbness or tingling in the extremities
  • Feeling coldness in the fingers or toes
  • Cramping, weakness, or pain in the muscles
  • Swelling in the legs and feet

Peripheral artery disease is among the most common causes of circulation issues. This condition, caused by plaque that disrupts the flow of blood to the feet and legs, decreases blood flow to the extremities and negatively affects circulation. Poor circulation is also often caused by blood clotting. Other health conditions that can affect the circulation include diabetes, high blood pressure, atherosclerosis, and varicose veins.

Effectively treating circulation issues begins with successfully pinpointing the root cause of the problem. Simple efforts like wearing compression socks, exercising, quitting smoking, and losing weight can be helpful. Certain prescription medications to help manage blood pressure or prevent blood clotting may be recommended based on your medical history. We always make sure to gain all the necessary and pertinent information before making any diagnosis or recommendation.

The sooner that circulation issues are detected and diagnosed, the more effectively they can be treated. For more information, or to schedule an appointment at one of our now nine Atlanta area locations (including our newest locations in Buford and Braselton), contact Family Practice Center today.
